Four Records in the Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona in a day that deserves to be highlighted
Veronica Campbell-Brown and Moses Masai have been the great winners of the Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona, which has taken place this afternoon in the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys of Montjuic. The Jamaican sprinter has beaten in a spectacular way in the 200m with a time of 21.98 and the long-distance runner from Kenya has proved he is one of the athletes with most possibilities of reaching an Olympic medal in a dreamt 5000m race in which he has broken a Stadium's legendary record made by the German Dieter Baumann, who was the 1992 Olympic champion. Masai has won with a time of 12:55.72
The Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona has taken place again after having been out for eight years. It has filled once more the Olympic Stadium of Montjuic with great athletes. This stadium was the home of the Olympic Games in 1992. The Meeting has reached its fourteenth edition in an splendorous way, 26 years after its creation and after having had some interruptions. With this come back it has shown that Barcelona should have in its sports activity calendar a high profile athletics event as this is.
Around 7000 responded to the Meeting's call. It was a very hot afternoon, 29ºC approximately. The honorary president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch, and the presidents of the Spanish and European Federations, José María Odriozola and Hansjorg Wirz, were together in the president's box. All of them paying close attention to the development of the competitions and probably looking forward the celebration of the Barcelona 2010 European Championships, here, in this same setting.
A Spanish record set by the extraordinary Marta Domínguez in the 3000m Steeplechase plus four meeting records got during the Meeting's celebration have been the result of a fantastic athletics day that in many different ways has put this season Spanish ranking list up side down. Marta had some doubts on the convenience of participating or not on the Steeplechase event because of a pain she had on her gluteus, but her well recognised bravery and her wish of standing out on Montjuic`s main track helped her not only no participate in the competition but to be one of the best.
Domínguez, who sometimes ran ahead the Kenian Eunice Jepkorir, world leader this year, has made a time of 9:21.76. Rosa Morató, who has lost her record precisely in Montjuic, had to give up in what was an enormous disappointment for her many fans. Lacy Janson (4,50m) in Pole Vault, Peninah Chempchumba (15:15.32 in 5000m) and the before mentioned Campbell-Brown and Masai have been the authors of the four meeting records. However, during the Meeting, there have been some other great stars such as: Mario Pestano, Angel David Rodríguez, Miguel Quesada, Natalia Rodríguez, Judit Plá, Javier Bermejo... for all of them, Beijing is much closer today.
