12/06/2009
The Volunteers of Barcelona 2010 will arrange a giant Mexican wave to give credit to the Tour de France on the 9th of July, when the bicyclists will carry out the final of the sixth stage in Barcelona. In order to achieve the biggest wave the world has ever seen, 400,000 people will participate in the streets of Barcelona. The City’s Council expects the help of 500 volunteers, most of them from the European Athletics Championships Barcelona 2010 campaign, to come up with the best result possible. The job of the volunteers, who can still register on the homepage www.bcn.cat/tour, will be distributing yellow banners amongst the people who will be gathering in the streets to watch the spectacle, as tribute to the world’s greatest bicycle race. The volunteers will also function as coordinators, when it comes to moving the banners. The goal is that the citizens, who will be standing next to the passage the cyclists will be passing, lift up the yelow banners towards the sky. The Mexican wave, which will paint the city in yellow and accompany the bicyclists, will be especially visible on TV. The 181.5 kilometers long sixth stage of the Tour de France will start in Girona and arrive at the Olympic Stadium Lluís Companys. Once it enters Barcelona, it will pass by many city sighs, such as the Meridiana and Consell de Cent, go downwards towards the sea to get to Plaza de Colón, the Paral.el, Plaza de Espanya, Reina María Cristina, Rius i Taulet and the Avinguda de l´Estadi, where the finish line is set up. The Barcelona 2010 volunteers' department possesses in these moments more than 1,950 volunteers. The campaign of captation began on November 1, 2008. The organization thinks that it will need approximately 3,000 volunteers.
