The 2009 Spanish Athletics Championships will be held in the Olympic Stadium Lluis Companys in Montjuic, according to an agreement made by The Spanish Royal Athletics Federation. This decision was made in a meeting that had place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife where the 2008 Championship was taking place last weekend. Next year's event has been framed as a very important test event face to the European Athletics Championship Barcelona 2010, due to a big number of competitions that will be done following a similar format, with qualifying rounds, semi-finals and finals.

The dates for the championship will be August 1st and 2nd 2009, a week after the celebration of the fifteenth edition of the Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona, scheduled on 25 July. The athletics atmosphere in the city will be very active during that week because of the significance of both athletics events and also because the IAAF World Athletics Championship will be held very close to that date. In 2009 that Championship will be celebrated in Berlin between the 15 and 23 August.
