The stars land in Barcelona
The first star in arriving was the US middle-runner Hazel Clark and today very early this morning it was also done by one of the greatest participant stars of the Meeting Ciutat de Barcelona, the Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown, who will participate in the 200m race, distance in which she is this year's number one in the world, and besides the current Olympic champion.
The superb Jamaican sprinter was very tired when she arrived coming from Prague but she is very eager of getting the best results in her first performance in our city. The objective seems so clear to make a better time less than 22 seconds, something she has only got once in all her career long (Kingston,15 May 2008).
A total of 21 women have got less than 22 seconds, amongst them two in the same Olympic Stadium of Montjuic: Gwen Torrence (21.72 and 21.81) and Juliet Cuthbert (21.75). The first one was Olympic champion in 1992.
In Saturday's competition she will compete against 19 years old Bianca Knight and also against the Cuban Roxana Diaz, two of her most main opponents.
KIM COLLINS, IN 200 METRES
The Caribbean athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis Kim Collins, 100m World champion in Paris 2003, is the most important registration of the last time. In Barcelona, he will participate in the only sprint event there will be in the programme, the 200m race. In this distance there will be another well known US sprinter, Bernard Williams, probably the friendliest athlete in the circuit.
Amongst the registrations of the Spanish athletes it has to be mentioned the drop of Iris Fuentes-Pila, who was going to take part in the 800m race; however, some other interesting registrations are expected such as the one of Junior Miguel Ángel Sancho (third in the High Jump in the Bydgoszcz World Championships) or the one of the promising sprinter from L'Hospitalet Ovidiyi Oji, who is already running with her Spanish passport after having carried out all the endless bureaucratic process that did not let her do it. She will participate in the 200m race along with the Catalan athlete Laia Forcadell.
