Barcelona is a Mediterranean city nestled between the sea and the mountains: a lively city which never stops and which has much to offer culturally, artistically and in business. With just over one and a half million inhabitants, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain. Its metropolitan area is made up of thirty municipalities in which nearly four million people live.
Barcelona is the economic and political capital of Catalonia and is at the head of an emerging area of economic enterprise in southern Europe. The city has a reputation of being hard working and one with a leaning towards business.
The urban area extends between the Montjuïc and Tibidabo mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. It is a modern and cosmopolitan city, but it has also inherited many centuries of history. It lays claim to an invaluable architectural and monumental heritage with the Gothic and Modernist being two periods of outstanding splendour.
The 1992 Olympic Games gave the city the chance to start a spectacular process of global transformation that was completed with the Culture Forum in 2004.
The city has maintained its traditional charms, its open and welcoming character and enjoys a sunny climate with pleasant temperatures almost all year round. All this allows visitors to enjoy a stroll through the streets of a city that is being constantly revamped.
Barcelona also has a renowned tradition in hosting both national and international athletics competitions. Amongst these we can highlight the World Cup in Athletics in 1989 and the World Indoor Championships in 1995. Continuing its desire to figure on the International Athletic scene, the city has taken up the challenge of organising the 20th European Athletics Championships and is hoping for successful participation from both competitors and the people of Barcelona.
